Mexico is a FABULOUS winter holiday destination. Anyone who needs a break from the cold will appreciate a winter vacation to Mexico. From pristine beaches to colonial towns, Mexico offers a wide variety of winter destinations. Check out these 5 reasons to spend the winter in Mexico.
1. A warm vacation spot year round
Mexico averages a balmy 75 degrees Fahrenheit in December and January with little to no rain. This warm, dry weather is a fantastic escape for those of us who hail from the northern United States and Canada. While your relatives scrape snow from their windshields you could be relaxing on a Mexican beach sipping a margarita. We spend the winter months in Mexico snorkeling, kayaking, and relaxing on the beach.
2. Elaborate Christmas holiday celebrations (in the sun!)
The Mexican people love a big party, and the holidays are the ULTIMATE Mexican fiesta. The week between Christmas and New Years is a huge celebration, and even the smallest towns go all out when it comes to Christmas and New Years parties. One tiny town we visited closed down the entire town center all night long on New Years Eve, and everyone stayed out dancing until long after the sun came up. Of course, it’s easy to stay out all night on New Years Eve when it’s still a comfortable 60 degrees out at midnight!
3. Fresh produce right off the tree
Thanks to the warm year round climate, Mexico boasts fresh, straight from the tree produce year round. There is a constant supply of fresh citrus, avocados, tomatoes, and just about any other fruit or vegetable you can imagine. Most small farms in Mexico are organic, and the produce you pick up has often just been picked that very day.
4. Feast on delicious local cuisine
Mexico is famous for its food for a reason. When you travel through Mexico there are restaurants, taco stands, and eateries everywhere. Food is an important part of Mexican culture, and the cuisine definitely does not disappoint. In Mexico you will find everything from slow roasted meats to salsas made from fresh picked tomatoes. Some of the food is spicy, some rich and savory, and there’s always plenty of fresh fruit around. The variety of Mexican cuisine means that we never tire of the food, even after spending months in Mexico.

5. An affordable winter getaway
You have likely heard that Mexico is an affordable destination, but it may surprise you just how affordable it really is. Our MONTHLY budget in Baja is just $1000, and that includes meals out and the occasional souvenir. Now, realistically, if you plan to head to Mexico for a shorter visit, perhaps a week, you will likely spend more than $250 once you factor in transportation. But you could certainly spend a week in Mexico for well under $1000, and even less if you decide to drive rather than fly into the country. Here you can read more about our Mexican travel budget. When it comes to cheap winter vacations, Mexico will give you plenty of bang for your buck!
If you’re looking for a break from the cold, a cultural experience, or just a relaxing beach vacation Mexico truly is one of the best winter vacation spots in the world!
